Cantate Canticum Novum... Sing We a Joyful New Song!
Once again we will begin our journey into Lent with our annual Jazz Sunday Service! Our Choir Director, Tim Karth, promises you will be moved by the Holy Spirit. Next Sunday, February 26, our choirs and instrumentalists will do what we do best. Snap to it! We have two special anthems including Jazz Cantate and I'm Gonna Leave Here Shoutin'! In addition, we will feature a Youth Jazz Combo and for the first time ever in the history of this service, the organ will be swinging! Come, bring a friend and be ready to sing, smile, laugh, and praise your way to a glorious day!
Adult Lenten Study
We live in a culture where it is more important to be right than it is to work together. People hurt us and we hurt others. Forgiveness is an act that often is not practiced. We have some odd notions of what it means to forgive. It does not mean that we are to be doormats. Our study will be the DVD-based series, Embracing Forgiveness by Barbara Crafton. There is also a study-guide that goes with the series. This is a five-session study that will have a day and an evening offering. The daytime sessions will begin Tuesday, March 14, at 2:00 pm and the evening sessions will be Thursdays at 7:00 pm, beginning March 16. If you would like to be a part of these groups, please sign up in the church office. We will be happy to offer both groups if there are sufficient numbers for both groups. We need a minimum of five people to sign up at either/both times to offer that class at that time. If you want a book ordered for you, please sign up in the church office by March 1. The cost of the book is $10.
Pastor Tim's Book Discussion
Pastor Tim’s next book for discussion is Jesus Cow by Michael Perry. “Life is suddenly full of drama for low-key Harley Jackson: A woman in a big red pickup has stolen his bachelor’s heart, a Hummer-driving predatory developer is threatening to pave the last vestiges of his family farm, and inside his barn is a calf bearing the image of Jesus Christ. His best friend, Billy, a giant of a man who shares his trailer house with a herd of cats and tries to pass off country music lyrics as philosophy, urges him to avoid the woman, fight the developer, and get rich off the calf. But Harley takes the opposite tack, hoping to avoid what his devout, dearly departed mother would have called ‘a scene.’”
This book is available in print and audio forms through the Wauwatosa Public Library as well as through major booksellers. It is available as a Kindle edition through Amazon. They also have used copies starting at $.01. We will meet at 11 am, March 19, in the Heywood Room.
Altar Flowers Needed
Altar flowers add so much to our Sunday morning worship experience, and we are inviting you to think about providing flowers sometime during the coming year. If you haven’t noticed, there’s a new 2017 altar flower calendar located in Fellowship Hall (on the side of the refrigerator by the sink). Think about a person you might like to honor, a special date you want to observe, a deceased loved-one you would like to remember by giving flowers. Please sign your name on the chart, along with what you want printed in the bulletin (flowers in honor, in memory of someone, or to celebrate a special day). Specific instructions are posted on the chart.
